Rethinking Swedish migration policy – the dilemmas of the Tidö agreement

Adopted in 2022, the Tidö Agreement will tighten the rules of Sweden’s asylum system. The strategy of indirect deterrence may reduce the number of asylum seekers in the short term, but in the long term it may lead to social tensions and hinder the integration of new arrivals. The analysis shows how the shift in migration policy has also led to a redefinition of Swedish national identity.
